Thusday Movie Picks #325: Horror Houses

This being Thursday, it's time for another edition of Thursday Movie Picks, the blogathon run by Wandering Through the Shelves. We're into October, which means that we're going to get horror-themed editions. This week's theme is "Horror Houses", and I had some movies in mind that I had already used. In the end, I was able to come up with three more recent (at least by my standards) movies:

House of the Damned (1963). A Maury Dexter quickie, this one has architect Ron Foster and wife Merry Anders investigating a house where the eccentric owner was declared insane many years ago, to see if it can be let out as is or whether work will need to be done on the place. But once they get up there, things start happening that lead them to believe someone or something is out to get them.

The Legend of Hell House (1973). An investigator of the paranormal is hired by a billionaire who has recently purchased a supposedly haunted house, with the job of investigating what, if anything, is haunting the house, or if there's a scientifically explainable phenomenon. The last time an investigation was essayed, all but one member of the party wound up dead! This time, the investigation includes Roddy McDowall and Pamela Franklin.

House (1977). Japanese outré horror film in which an adolescent Japanese student gets a letter from aunt out in the country suggesting she come for a visit. So she gets together six of her friends and they set off to visit the old lady. However, extremely strange causes of death start visiting various members of the party, all photographed in a style that makes you wonder whether this was meant as serious horror or a parody.

I saw Legend of Hill House years ago and was scared but found it campy at the same time. I’d like to see the first film.
